John was comparatively easy: greyTraveler (referencing Odin because the trickster-ness and the Norse pantheon in general, particularly Thor who occasionally has clever moments but is actually kind of stolid. Yes there is an in-story reason besides the hammerkind that he’s Norse themed. )

…he turned out slightly skeazy looking in the first one, oops. :I Well, he looks even skeazier without the glasses, so I guess this is an improvement, all in all.

I just really appreciate the fact that (shipping aside, although the shipping is interesting too it’s not usually why I read a fic) the whole thing is about Eridan getting his shit together. And that is supremely fun. :) Also the other trolls being grown up and badass and just this whole universe is so interesting! :O (But also be warned it has EriKar and sex and other stuff in, so if that isn’t your kaboodle then you might want to not. ;) Just a tip. The above statement is exactly what I thought. Really it started in the lab though when he was pouring his heart out to her and she was clearly not caring. To watch him suffer a bout then snark @ him and leave him alone was painful to watch. WTF. I’m still not over it. At least Rhodey showed he cared about how Tony was doing.

Yes, because when she walked over to Tony and practically held him in her arms she was really uncaring wow so heartless.

and god forbid a woman choose her physical safety over taking care of her man’s emotional state, which you know, just put her physical safety at risk there

I hate to butt in but I was really pleased with this scene because this is PTSD done right and reactions by someone who doesn’t have PTSD done right.

I have high-level PTSD and have had to deal with it for about eight and a half months now. I have night terrors worse than Tony’s. I thrash in my sleep, kick, fight, and scream. In the time that this has been going on, I’ve had two friends who have spent the night with me in an attempt to see if someone calming and strong sleeping next to me would ease the night terrors. Out of three collective nights that they stayed with me, it was successful only once. The final night, my second friend had to leave the bed and sleep on the couch because I was thrashing so much in my sleep. He’s 6’2” and a military officer who can definitely kick my ass in a fight if I were awake. I was hurting him so much in my sleep and scaring the daylights out of him that he had to leave. When someone with PTSD is in the grips of a really violent night terror, they fight tooth and nail more violently than if they were awake. Yes, it hurt me that he did that but I get why he did it. He was scared for his safety because I was fighting so hard in my sleep. My other friend that stayed with me watched me suffer through a night terror like Pepper did with Tony and tried to wake me up after a few minutes of me whimpering and kicking in my sleep. I nearly decked him coming out of it because I was still swamped in the dream and had idea what was going on.

Both men reacted similar to Pepper. They were scared, they were hurt, they were terrified for me, about what I was doing and going through, and had no idea how to handle it, save walking away to breathe. When you don’t have PTSD, but your partner does, it is incredibly difficult to understand what they are going through and how their mind operates, especially when asleep when the PTSD manifests in nightmares and night terrors.

So don’t you say that Pepper wasn’t supporting Tony by walking out. She was putting her physical safety first, which is a perfectly legitimate action to do in that situation. It hurts Tony obviously, but she still supports him and loves him and helps him through the PTSD in the morning. She listens to him when he rambles and tries to articulate what it’s like inside his head since New York as he’s trying to express why he’s acting the way he is. Listening and still loving them at the end of the day is the best thing you can do for someone with PTSD.

I was incredibly pleased with how they handled the rather touchy subject of PTSD in this film because I’ve had to live through that hell for eight and a half months now and know what it’s like day in and day out to struggle with your own brain, especially against nightmares, night terrors, and panic/anxiety attacks.

So to all the people hating on Pepper for her reaction in this scene: shut up. You have no room to talk. Had you been in her position, you would have left the room too. Don’t try to speak authoritatively about something you know nothing about. Thank you.

I am so glad this post exists because I had that exact same thought about Pepper and now I have a better understanding of that whole scene

Tiny typography nitpick: the brackets and the apostrophe D were not necessary. “Troped” would have looked better though it is not any more real than [Trope]’d. Also: I agree you should go ahead and use an idea even if it’s been done before, who knows, you might take it in a new direction. (Though I am not sure if you could do that with something like “blanket fic.”) A lot of my fic plays with already existing tropes/concepts/themes.

And some really bad grammar. The writers are dropping articles and tenses everywhere. And I feel like I’m being told a story by a small child. Which was particularly disturbing with the fanfic with the sex scenes by the way.

dude i’m way too old to be reading a teenager’s sexual fantasies it makes me feel like a heinous perv D:

The writing in the two fics I found last night was much “younger” than teen aged to me. The prose was very short and choppy and had an earnest tell-instead-of-show third person omniscient. It kind of reminded me of the stuff I was writing when I was ten. (Of course I was not trying to write edgy dark fic when I was ten. I was being accused of plagiarism because I was writing fanfic for Meredith Ann Pierce’s Birth of the Firebringer.)

The first fic was trying very hard to be edgy and dark and poetic, with lots of short repetitive third person omniscient phrases. Lots of “tell instead of show” moments and super short chapters.

The second fic kept earnestly trying to remind the reader that Earth had been invaded by the trolls and had a lot of info dumping. In both fics, everyone was out of character, particularly Dave. (With the writer apologizing for the OOC Dave.)

This lady was such a badass, I can’t count the ways, but let’s try.

She got married to an already successful pirate, Zheng Yi, and took over when he died. She was crazy strict to keep an iron fist over her fleet of pirates, and the punishments for stepping out of line were brutal. If you stole or looted from a town that provided assistance or tribute to the pirate fleet, Ching would chop your fucking head off with a battle axe and dump your lifeless body in the ocean. If you stole from the pirate treasury, or she thought you were stealing from the pirate treasury, Ching would chop your fucking head off dump your lifeless body in the ocean. Raping any captured female prisoners was punishable by immediate death. Fuck, if you had consensual sex while on duty you got your head chopped off and the woman was chucked off the boat no matter where they were at. Ching wasn’t fucking around, and she wanted to make damn sure you weren’t fucking around when you should have been working.

Two years after she took over, she got so notorious for ransacking towns and taking taxes on them that she pissed off the entire Chinese government, and sent out a massive fleet to bring her in line. Most pirates probably would’ve said this was out of their pay grade and taken off to hide out or ransack some other country.

Ching Shih said fuck that.

She not only faced them head on, she wiped the floor with them, killing hundreds and capturing sixty-something ships from the Imperial Fleet. Prisoners were given the choice of joining up or being executed on the spot. The Admiral of the Chinese navy, Kwo Lang, was so afraid of being captured by her or going back to admit he’d been beaten by her that he committed suicide.

For the next two years, Ching Shih not only kept on pirating, she fought off Chinese forces as well as Dutch and British warships that the navy called in to help. Finally the government gave up and offered her amnesty as well as amnesty for her then SEVENTEEN THOUSAND crewman. Ching Shih got to keep all her plunder, so she retired to the countryside where she opened up a brothel and lived until she was 69.

tldr: I’ve come to terms with the reality that I’ll never be as terrifyingly badass as this woman was.

I hate fanfic where there are a lot of pairings but they are all in the background or barely mentioned because there is only one main pairing that gets any attention. In this case the main pairing is Karkat/John with background pairings that haven’t even happened yet. (I am looking for Dave/Terezi)

Dave is out of character even allowing for AU

Karkat is extremely out of character and is just kind of aggressively nasty and foulmouthed instead of defensively foulmouthed to hide his inner marshmallow.

Everyone still sounds like they’re being narrated by a small child.
